NWSD ANNOUNCES NEW SUBSIDISED TUITION FEE PROGRAM

NWSD and Klerksdorp Community Group Introduce Subsidized Tuition Program to Support Future Designers

Klerksdorp, Orkney, Stilfontein – February 27, 2025 – The North West School of Design

(NWSD), in collaboration with Klerksdorp Community Marketing, is proud to unveil a groundbreaking subsidized tuition fee program. This initiative, made possible through the generous support of local businesses, aims to provide aspiring designers with an unparalleled opportunity to pursue their creative ambitions while alleviating financial constraints.

In response to the current economic climate and the financial challenges faced by many families, this program will enable eligible students to access world-class design education at a significantly reduced cost. Selected students will benefit from a 45% tuition fee subsidy, paying only 55% of the standard monthly tuition fees.

Application Process

To be considered for this prestigious program, prospective students must first complete an online application test, available on the NWSD website. Following this, applicants should contact Oratile, the admissions officer, via email to express their interest. Oratile will provide guidance and support throughout the remainder of the application process. Closing date is 4 April, as classes start 8 April

This opportunity is open to school leavers over the age of 18 residing in Klerksdorp, Orkney, and Stilfontein. A total of six students will be selected to benefit from this initiative, marking a significant step in making design education more accessible to the local community.

Additional Benefits

Beyond financial assistance, the program offers additional support in the form of fabric supplies for student projects, generously sponsored by NWSD alumni. This ensures that students have access to essential materials, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in their creative journey without financial strain.

Bridging the Gap in Education Accessibility

This initiative was developed in response to the growing number of students who do not qualify for NSFAS funding due to household incomes exceeding the eligibility threshold, yet still find full tuition fees unaffordable. With rising electricity costs and increasing living expenses, many families are struggling to make ends meet. The NWSD subsidised tuition program aims to bridge this gap, providing deserving students with the financial relief necessary to pursue their passion for design.

Existing Support Programs

NWSD has long been committed to supporting aspiring designers through initiatives such as the esteemed Gert Johan Coetzee Bursary, which fully funds one student each year. However, the new subsidised tuition program expands this support to a wider group of talented individuals, ensuring that more students receive the opportunity to develop their skills and thrive in the design industry

The North West School of Design remains dedicated to empowering the next generation of designers, nurturing creativity, and providing students with the tools they need to build successful futures in the dynamic world of fashion and design. Peter Walker, a representative from the supporting company, White Birch Group emphasised the importance of such initiatives, stating, “Every little bit helps to keep the wheels of the economy turning. We hope more businesses will get involved in helping.”

FASHION LYMPICS: CELEBRATING TEAM SPIRIT AND FUN AT NWSD

At the North West School of Design (NWSD), the annual Fashion Lympics is a cherished tradition that perfectly embodies the school’s motto: “Work hard, play hard.” This team-building day invites students to trade their classroom workstations for an exciting, fashion-forward adventure filled with camaraderie, competition, and creativity.

On this day, students are divided into three vibrant groups, each with their own unique identity and flair. The Versace team, draped in green, brings an aura of luxury and boldness. The Chanel team, dressed in pink, exudes elegance and charm. Meanwhile, the Gucci team, glowing in yellow, represents innovation and energy. Each group rallies around their team creed, adding an extra layer of spirit and motivation to the event.

The festivities begin with enthusiastic team chants and dance-offs, setting an electric atmosphere. What follows is a series of fun and friendly athletic challenges designed to bring students together and foster a strong sense of teamwork. From relay races to shot put, every activity showcases the dedication and creativity that NWSD students are known for.

The day culminates in a true South African tradition braai. As the aroma of sizzling ‘boere- wors’ fills the air, students unwind, share laughs, and connect with one another in the most authentic way possible. It’s a moment to celebrate not just their fashion talents, but also their unity as a community.

The Fashion Lympics is more than just a break from the norm—it’s a reminder of the importance of balance, collaboration, and having fun. At NWSD, this vibrant day stands as a testament to the school’s belief that excellence is achieved when you pair hard work with moments of joy and togetherness.
