BRIDAL CHALLENGE 2024

Winning garment: Jennifer Mphahlele | Model: Philani Sebe | Photographer: Melanie Els

A Journey of Creativity, Elegance, and Precision – by Henrico Jackson (3rd Year Fashion Comm)

In the world of fashion, few things rival the excitement and pressure of designing bridal gowns. This year, I had the chance to experience a truly unique event—the Bridal Challenge. Over the course of four days, participants were tasked with creating a bridal gown that embodied a specific theme. This wasn’t just about putting a dress together; it was about creativity, vision, and meticulous execution.

The challenge began with sketching. For any designer, sketching is where the magic starts. It’s where ideas come to life on paper before they can become reality. Each contestant had to carefully plan every detail of their gown, ensuring it captured the spirit of the theme.

After the sketching phase, the real work began: gathering resources. Fabric, lace, beads, and other materials had to be sourced, often from limited supplies. This part of the challenge was almost as demanding as designing itself. The contestants had to be resourceful and make sure that the materials they chose would complement their design perfectly.

Then came the final stage—assembling the gown and undergoing a strict quality check. Every seam, every stitch, and every detail had to be flawless. The gown needed to not only look beautiful but stand up to scrutiny in terms of craftsmanship. The pressure was palpable as the deadline approached.

At the end of those four intense days, it was time for the judges to deliberate. This year, the theme was “Bridgerton,” and the designers pulled out all the stops to capture the regency-era charm and opulence. The winner? Jennifer, a third-year fashion design student, who perfectly embodied the Bridgerton theme with her gown. Her dress was a stunning combination of elegance and historical accuracy, with intricate detailing that truly transported you back in time.

Seeing Jennifer’s final creation, it was clear why she won. Every element of her gown—was a nod to the grandeur and sophistication of the Bridgerton era. It was a masterpiece, deserving of the top spot.

THe Bridal Challenge wasn’t just a competition; it was a testament to the skill, creativity, and perseverance of each participant. It’s moments like these that remind us why we love fashion—the ability to tell stories and evoke emotions through design. And in this challenge, Jennifer’s gown did just that.

NWSD ANNOUNCES NEW SUBSIDISED TUITION FEE PROGRAM

NWSD and Klerksdorp Community Group Introduce Subsidized Tuition Program to Support Future Designers

Klerksdorp, Orkney, Stilfontein – February 27, 2025 – The North West School of Design

(NWSD), in collaboration with Klerksdorp Community Marketing, is proud to unveil a groundbreaking subsidized tuition fee program. This initiative, made possible through the generous support of local businesses, aims to provide aspiring designers with an unparalleled opportunity to pursue their creative ambitions while alleviating financial constraints.

In response to the current economic climate and the financial challenges faced by many families, this program will enable eligible students to access world-class design education at a significantly reduced cost. Selected students will benefit from a 45% tuition fee subsidy, paying only 55% of the standard monthly tuition fees.

Application Process

To be considered for this prestigious program, prospective students must first complete an online application test, available on the NWSD website. Following this, applicants should contact Oratile, the admissions officer, via email to express their interest. Oratile will provide guidance and support throughout the remainder of the application process. Closing date is 4 April, as classes start 8 April

This opportunity is open to school leavers over the age of 18 residing in Klerksdorp, Orkney, and Stilfontein. A total of six students will be selected to benefit from this initiative, marking a significant step in making design education more accessible to the local community.

Additional Benefits

Beyond financial assistance, the program offers additional support in the form of fabric supplies for student projects, generously sponsored by NWSD alumni. This ensures that students have access to essential materials, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in their creative journey without financial strain.

Bridging the Gap in Education Accessibility

This initiative was developed in response to the growing number of students who do not qualify for NSFAS funding due to household incomes exceeding the eligibility threshold, yet still find full tuition fees unaffordable. With rising electricity costs and increasing living expenses, many families are struggling to make ends meet. The NWSD subsidised tuition program aims to bridge this gap, providing deserving students with the financial relief necessary to pursue their passion for design.

Existing Support Programs

NWSD has long been committed to supporting aspiring designers through initiatives such as the esteemed Gert Johan Coetzee Bursary, which fully funds one student each year. However, the new subsidised tuition program expands this support to a wider group of talented individuals, ensuring that more students receive the opportunity to develop their skills and thrive in the design industry

The North West School of Design remains dedicated to empowering the next generation of designers, nurturing creativity, and providing students with the tools they need to build successful futures in the dynamic world of fashion and design. Peter Walker, a representative from the supporting company, White Birch Group emphasised the importance of such initiatives, stating, “Every little bit helps to keep the wheels of the economy turning. We hope more businesses will get involved in helping.”

FASHION LYMPICS: CELEBRATING TEAM SPIRIT AND FUN AT NWSD

At the North West School of Design (NWSD), the annual Fashion Lympics is a cherished tradition that perfectly embodies the school’s motto: “Work hard, play hard.” This team-building day invites students to trade their classroom workstations for an exciting, fashion-forward adventure filled with camaraderie, competition, and creativity.

On this day, students are divided into three vibrant groups, each with their own unique identity and flair. The Versace team, draped in green, brings an aura of luxury and boldness. The Chanel team, dressed in pink, exudes elegance and charm. Meanwhile, the Gucci team, glowing in yellow, represents innovation and energy. Each group rallies around their team creed, adding an extra layer of spirit and motivation to the event.

The festivities begin with enthusiastic team chants and dance-offs, setting an electric atmosphere. What follows is a series of fun and friendly athletic challenges designed to bring students together and foster a strong sense of teamwork. From relay races to shot put, every activity showcases the dedication and creativity that NWSD students are known for.

The day culminates in a true South African tradition braai. CELEBRATING FRANCOISE DE VILLIERS: A NWSD LEGEND

Francoise De Villiers, a distinguished North West School of Design (NWSD) Fashion Communication Alumni, continues to inspire students with her remarkable journey and contributions to the fashion industry. Her class work remains a valuable resource in our library, serving as a testament to her enduring legacy. After graduating from NWSD, Francoise embarked on her career as a catalogue stylist for the e-commerce platform Zando. There, she honed her skills in styling clothing under tight time constraints, ensuring each piece looked flawless on camera while adhering to strict brand guidelines. Her ability to meet daily targets with minimal post-production editing showcased her expertise in quick and effective styling.

Francoise’s career trajectory took her to Highbury Safika Media, where she served as a fashion assistant. Responsible for sourcing and styling fashion and product editorials for various magazines, including The Wedding Album, Cape Etc Magazine, JSE, and Diners Club, she developed a keen eye for décor styling. Her talent led to her promotion as décor editor for Livingspace Magazine, Equinox, and The Wedding Album, where she continued to excel in fashion and product shoots. Eventually, she became the Visual Manager, overseeing the décor and fashion department and acting as a visual consultant to interns, stylists, and editors.

In 2018, Francoise signed with Gloss Artist Management in Cape Town as a full-time fashion and props/set design stylist. Her skills in props and set design were quickly recognized, leading to regular bookings by H&M Home for their décor editorials in South Africa. She also worked with prominent clients such as Promod, Citroën, Vero Moda, Cubus, and Barbour4.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 provided Francoise with the opportunity to pursue her dream of starting her own fashion label. She launched Studio Çoise in September 2020, offering timeless, high-quality, conscious-driven womenswear inspired by European aesthetics. The brand’s garments are locally made using premium fabrics and clean construction methods, with a made-to-order model that reduces waste and allows for customization. Francoise’s dedication to quality is evident in her collaboration with a highly skilled seamstress from Zimbabwe, who has been with her from the start.

In 2023, Francoise transitioned to a new role in her family business, Frapeja Logistics, as a full-time operations manager in logistics and freight forwarding. Despite this shift, she continues to develop new designs for Studio Çoise, embracing a “slow fashion” approach.

Francoise De Villiers remains a NWSD legend, inspiring current and future students with her innovative work and unwavering commitment to excellence. Her journey is a shining example of the impact NWSD alumni can have on the fashion industry and beyond.

NORTH WEST SCHOOL OF DESIGN CELEBRATES THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2024

On the 12th of April 2024, the North West School of Design hosted a heartfelt and inspiring graduation ceremony to honour the Class of 2024—celebrating not only their academic accomplishments, but also the creativity, resilience, and passion that have defined their journey.

The atmosphere was one of pride and excitement as graduates, families, lecturers, and industry partners gathered to witness the final steps of a remarkable chapter and the first steps into the world of fashion. Head of Institution, Marlene Oosthuizen, delivered a deeply moving address, drawing from her years of experience in the industry and her unwavering belief in the potential of her students. “Today, we gather to celebrate a momentous occasion – the result of your hard work, creativity, and determination,” she began.

Her speech echoed with wisdom and inspiration, weaving together reflections from some of the world’s most influential commencement addresses. Quoting the likes of Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Tim Cook, Marlene encouraged the graduates to embrace passion, perseverance, adaptability, authenticity, and courage as they begin their professional journeys.

“Seek out what sets your soul on fire and never settle for anything less,” she said. “Be bold, be fearless, and never let circumstances define you. Fashion is not just about clothing – it is about storytelling, identity, and transformation.”

The ceremony marked a turning point for the graduates, who leave NWSD equipped with the skills, confidence, and vision to make their mark in the fashion world. Throughout their time at the school, they explored everything from design and garment construction to fashion business, styling, and communication – proving themselves capable of tackling real-world challenges with innovation and intent.

DRESS UP FUN AT NWSD

North West School of Design rounded off the term in true creative spirit with a lively Dress Up Day that brought smiles, laughter, and a burst of imagination to campus. This term’s theme, My Favourite Character, gave students the chance to step into the shoes of beloved icons from books, film, television, and pop culture. From whimsical fairytale figures to bold superheroes and nostalgic cartoon characters, the hallways were filled with a kaleidoscope of costumes. Students and staff alike embraced the day with enthusiasm, using their design flair to craft looks that were both personal and playful.

The event wasn’t just about fun – it was also a celebration of individuality and storytelling. Each outfit sparked conversation and connection, reminding everyone of the joy found in creative expression. WELCOMING BACK ONE OF OUR OWN: MEET MARIKE LAYNES

There’s something truly special about welcoming a former student back to NWSD – not as a guest or visitor, but this time, as part of the team. We’re thrilled to introduce Marike Laynes as the newest lecturer at North West School of Design.

Marike’s journey into the world of design didn’t begin in a studio, but rather in a classroom at North-West University, where she studied Consumer Science and Business. Her course covered a little bit of everything—fashion, consumer behaviour, economics, business management, nutrition, and interior design. But it was during her third year of university that something clicked. A growing love for fashion and textiles led her to take a leap of faith and enrol at NWSD in 2018.

From day one, Marike immersed herself fully in the NWSD experience. During her studies, she interned with various fashion designers in Klerksdorp, sharpening her skills and gaining hands-on experience. She completed her Level 4 Licentiateship through City & Guilds and was selected as one of the guest designers for that year’s Platinum Fashion Festival—an achievement that hinted at a bright future.

After graduation, Marike stepped into the world of couture, working as the manager at Esmene Couture. It was here she truly began to understand the business side of fashion and gained invaluable industry insight. But her creative path took a new turn when she returned to her roots—interior design—by taking over the family business, H & E Decorators.

With a bold vision and fresh energy, Marike rebranded the company in 2023 as Rauch Shai Interiors, breathing new life into the business. What started as a family legacy has grown into a thriving brand with a loyal clientele – many of whom have become friends.

But fashion never left her side. At the end of 2024, Marike launched Marike Laynes Couture, focusing on custom bridal and matric farewell gowns. That same year, she returned to the NWSD runway as an Alumni Designer at the Platinum Fashion Festival, celebrating the powerful intersection of fashion and technology.

Now in 2025, Marike brings her wealth of experience back to NWSD – this time as a lecturer. She’s currently teaching subjects like textiles and fashion illustration, all while still running her interior design business. And if that weren’t enough, she’s also embarked on a brand-new venture. In May, she partnered with JD Flooring to open Avitha Atavah by Rauch Shai Interiors – an interior design and gift shop based at Rockville Square in Wilkoppies. The vision? A one-stop destination for all things home.

Marike’s story is one of creativity, entrepreneurship, and coming full circle. From student to mentor, she embodies the spirit of NWSD – passionate, innovative, and always evolving. We’re proud to have her back, this time as a guiding hand for the next generation of designers.

Welcome home, Marike. We can’t wait to see how your journey continues to unfold – both in and out of the classroom.

PROUDLY INTERNATIONAL: NWSD'S BAC STATUS SETS US APART

At NWSD, we don’t just prepare students for the fashion world – we prepare them for the global stage. One of the key ways we do that is through our international accreditation by the British Accreditation Council (BAC) for Independent Further and Higher Education. This prestigious status places NWSD among a select group of institutions around the world that meet BAC’s high standards for quality in education. It confirms what we’ve always known: NWSD is a trusted, reliable, and internationally recognised fashion school.

We are proudly privately accredited, and while we are not government-registered in South Africa, our BAC international accreditation holds powerful weight across the globe. In fact, it is widely recognised by students, agents, and educational authorities as a leading mark of quality in the private sector.

BAC has been setting benchmarks in education for over 30 years and is a member of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA). Gaining this accreditation wasn’t handed to us – it came after a rigorous evaluation and an on-site inspection by BAC representatives from the UK. Every corner of our school was reviewed, from our leadership and management to our teaching methods and student support.

This kind of international quality assurance means our students can study with confidence, knowing that their education meets world-class standards. It’s more than a title – it’s a commitment. A commitment to excellence, to global relevance, and to giving our students the strongest platform to launch their careers in fashion.

We wear our BAC accreditation with pride. It’s part of what makes NWSD unique. And it’s just one of the many ways we continue to raise the bar for fashion education – locally and internationally.

At NWSD, we aren’t just part of the fashion world. We’re part of the global conversation.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

At NWSD, fashion is more than fabric and design. It’s a language – one that speaks of identity, vision, and courage. For me, it has always been about more than teaching students how to sketch or sew. It’s about shaping individuals who are bold enough to step into the world as creatives, leaders, and change-makers.

As the principal of NWSD, I’m incredibly proud of how far we’ve come. Our journey has been marked by innovation, resilience, and, international recognition through our accreditation by the British Accreditation Council (BAC). But milestones like these don’t happen overnight. They are built on years of commitment, collaboration, and a belief that independent education matters.

Being a privately accredited international centre means we’ve chosen a path of quality, depth, and personal attention. We are not bound by mass education systems. Instead, we are free to teach in a way that nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and true skill. Our classes are small by design. Our staff knows each student by name. And our campus is a space where you don’t have to fit in – you get to stand out.

My hope has always been that every student who walks through our doors feels seen, heard, and challenged. I want them to leave not only with technical excellence but with confidence in who they are and what they’re capable of. Whether they launch their own brand, work internationally, or take a less traditional route, our role is to equip them for that journey.

We are proud to carry the BAC accreditation, yes – but it’s what happens inside our walls every day that matters most. That’s where transformation happens. That’s where students become designers. And that’s why we do what we do.

Thank you for being part of NWSD’s story. Whether you are a student, a parent, a graduate, or a friend of the school – your belief in what we stand for keeps us going.

INTRODUCING THE REVAMPED X!ACT DESIGN PATTERNMAKER RELAUNCING SOON!

Klerksdorp, South Africa — The North West School of Design (NWSD) has announced the relaunch of its internationally acclaimed X!act Design Patternmaker, a South African-designed tool set to make professional pattern making more accessible than ever.

Originally launched in the early 2000s and awarded “Product of the Year” at the SAITEX exhibition, the X!act Design Patternmaker was developed by NWSD’s founder and principal, Marlene Oosthuizen. The tool quickly gained recognition for its innovative approach to teaching and producing accurate fashion patterns without the need for formal training or advanced technical skills. Now, more than two decades later, NWSD is relaunching the product with a renewed focus on accessibility, digital integration, and industry relevance.

“The relaunch of the X!act Patternmaker comes at a time when the fashion industry is seeking practical, sustainable solutions,” said Oosthuizen. “This tool empowers anyone—from home sewers to professional designers—to create perfectly fitted patterns with ease and confidence.”

Fashion Designer, ErnstSchütz with the X!act Design Patternmaker

The X!act Design Patternmaker is a compact 400mm x 400mm tool made from UV-resistant materials. It allows users to draft patterns for bodices, sleeves, skirts, pants, and various necklines, catering to a wide range of sizes and body types—including women, men, children, and maternity wear. Unlike traditional methods, it eliminates the need for paper patterns or years of training.

In addition to the tool itself, the new kit includes a basic design manual (available in print or digital format), access to 23 step-by-step video tutorials, and trainer support via email and phone. Users can also opt to earn a certificate in correspondence pattern making through NWSD.

Fashion Designer, CJ Gill with the X!act Design Patternmaker

The relaunch aligns with NWSD’s continued mission to equip aspiring designers and entrepreneurs with industry-relevant skills. It is also an opportunity to reconnect with sewing communities across South Africa and beyond.

“We see this tool becoming a staple not only in fashion schools, but in community sewing centres, rural development initiatives, and the hands of young creatives who want to make a mark in fashion,” Oosthuizen added.

The complete kit is priced at R1,860, with shipping included within South Africa. Pre-orders are currently open through NWSD, with nationwide availability expected to follow shortly.

THE GERT-JOHAN COETZEE BURSARY THAT TRANSFORMS LIVES

In the heart of South Africa’s fashion scene, a transformative opportunity continues to shape the future of aspiring creatives: the Gert-Johan Coetzee Bursary. Since its inception in 2009, this prestigious award has become more than just financial aid, it’s a gateway to possibility, mentorship, and mastery.

A Legacy of Opportunity

Offered annually at the internationally accredited North West School of Design (NWSD), the bursary covers full tuition for a three-year Fashion Design programme, a Bernina sewing machine, and a laptop — valued at over R200,000. But its true value lies in the mentorship and exposure recipients receive from Gert-Johan Coetzee himself, the couture visionary known for dressing international icons.

The 2025 Launch

Applications open on 1 August 2025 and close on 1 September 2025. Five finalists will be selected and invited to an exclusive event where Gert-Johan Coetzee will personally announce the winner. The next recipient will begin their journey in February 2026 in Klerksdorp, North West.

BURSARY WINNERS: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Yaaseen’s Journey

Yaaseen, a past bursary recipient, reflects on his experience with heartfelt gratitude: “Quite some time has passed since graduating from, what I might say, the best alma mater — the best-kept secret in fashion education. Marlene Oosthuizen and everyone involved shaped me into the person I am today. And of course, to Gert-Johan Coetzee — how lucky am I just?”

Initially inspired by his friend Andréa Willow, the 2016 bursary winner and now director of her own label, Yaaseen applied for the Fashion Communication bursary in 2017. He won, alongside Patrick Ferguson, who received the Fashion Design bursary. “I wanted to understand how fashion worked — always the why behind anything,” Yaaseen shares. “Thank goodness I pursued Communication. That circles back to Gert — brilliant, masterful in his own way. Because of that opportunity, I too became unique in my own way.”

From internships to freelancing, Yaaseen’s path eventually led him to Bash, where he now works in catalogue photography. “NWSD changed my way of thinking and inspired my determined work ethic completely. I’ve become more analytical, attentive, and especially open-minded.”

Milan Jordan: Reinventing the Future

Another standout success story is Milan Jordan, a 2019 bursary recipient. “It was such a huge blessing for me. I didn’t expect to win at all, and once I was announced as one of the recipients, it assured me that God wanted this to be a dream I pursued.” One of Milan’s most memorable highlights was planning NWSD’s final-year fashion show, Reinvention Generation – 2021. “I was in charge of ticket sales and Front of House. It was challenging, yet exciting. We had so much fun presenting our theme to the college. It gave us a real perspective on event planning.”

The bursary not only opened Milan’s eyes to the breadth of the fashion industry — it also paved the way for her next big move. Today, Milan is self-employed, building her own clothing brand, Milan Jordan Studios, and still thriving in the fashion industry. “It empowers younger people with a very great opportunity to be trained in the fashion industry. It opens doors for individuals who might not have had the chance to study or get the best training for the field. The bursary also ensures that the industry gains well-trained individuals with talent and drive.”

More Than a Scholarship — A Movement

The Gert-Johan Coetzee Bursary isn’t just about funding education — it’s about igniting ambition. It’s about being “the hungriest in the room,” as Gert once said.

Photographer: @tharinephotography

For Yaaseen, Milan, Andréa, and countless others, it has been a life-changing leap into the world of fashion. So, if you’ve ever dreamed of designing for icons or shaping the future of fashion communication — this is your moment. Apply. Be bold. Be hungry. Because Gert was onto something. Bridal Challenge 2025, Deconstructed Romance Redefines Bridal Fashion

Third-Year Designers Dazzle with Innovation and Individuality in Four-Day Bridal Gown Showdown:

NWSD recently became the epicentre of creative energy and sartorial brilliance as third-year students embarked on the annual Bridal Challenge. The stakes were high, the timeline punishing: in just four days, aspiring designers were tasked to conceptualize, design, cut, construct, and ultimately showcase an avant-garde bridal gown, in response to the exhilarating theme, “Deconstructed Romance.”

The brief called for a reimagining of bridal wear for the unconventional bride – a challenge to tradition, a celebration of individuality, and a bold push against the boundaries of expectation.

The Challenge: A Race Against Time

Every year, the Bridal Challenge stands as a rite of passage for NWSD’s third-year cohort, and this edition was no exception. From the moment the theme was announced, the studio

crackled with anticipation and nervous energy. “Deconstructed Romance” beckoned students to untangle the threads of tradition and reweave them into something entirely new: a gown for the bride who refuses to be confined by convention, who sees her wedding day as a canvas for self-expression rather than a script to be followed.

The challenge was more than a test of aesthetic vision and technical skill – it was a four-day marathon of creative problem-solving. Designers were required not only to sketch and plan, but to source materials, cut fabrics, and execute construction, all while keeping the end customer firmly in mind. The result? An electrifying showcase of contemporary bridal fashion, as unique and varied as the designers themselves.

The Showcase: A Dazzling Display

When the time arrived for the runway reveal, anticipation filled the room. Each designer presented a gown that not only embodied the theme but also bore the unique signature of its creator. The audience – comprised of faculty, family, industry professionals, and fellow students – watched as models glided down the runway, each look telling a story of defiance and innovation.

Some gowns stunned with theatrical volume, cascading layers in unexpected colours-rich burgundies, electric blues, and metallic hues – while others captivated with minimalist lines and subtle disruptions, such as exposed seams or asymmetrical draping. Accessories ranged from chunky boots and leather gloves to delicate veils of net and chain, bringing a resh edge to bridal styling.

For NWSD’s third-year designers, the Bridal Challenge was more than a test – it was a transformative experience. In just four days, they proved that bridal fashion can be artful, audacious, and deeply personal. The unconventional bride now has a gown that reflects her spirit, her story, and her refusal to settle for the ordinary.

THE X!ACT DESIGN PATTERNMAKER RETURNS: REIMAGINED FOR A NEW GENERATION OF DESIGNERS

Marlene Oosthuizen, founder of the X!act Design Patternmaker

There are tools that do more than assist; they shape careers, build confidence, and become trusted companions in the creative process. For many South African fashion students and professionals, the X!act Design Patternmaker is exactly that. After years of serving as a foundational tool in classrooms and studios, it returns, more powerful and accessible than ever before, reimagined for the digital age without losing the heart and heritage that made it a staple.

This relaunch brings more than just a refreshed look. The X!act Patternmaker now includes a 6-in-1 digital manual, neatly packaged into standalone PDF chapters. Each manual is a focused learning experience, designed to give you complete control over your journey, whether you’re revisiting familiar concepts or diving in for the first time. Alongside clear, step-by-step guidance, each chapter links directly to official X!act video tutorials and even includes bonus content curated by Marlene herself from platforms like YouTube and TikTok, ensuring the learning stays fresh, relevant, and easy to follow, no matter your preferred style.

The tool itself also gets a practical upgrade and now comes with a durable protective carry bag, perfect for safeguarding your Patternmaker, whether you’re heading to class, a client meeting, or simply working on the go. And behind the scenes, the relaunch owes much to the touch of Henrico Jackson, whose professional editing helped give the manuals their polish, clarity, and structure.

But perhaps the most exciting part of this relaunch is the chance to reconnect with the vibrant community that’s grown around the X!act over the years. We’re inviting all past and present users, students, lecturers, entrepreneurs, and creatives to share their stories . Whether it’s a photo of your well-loved tool, a testimonial about how it supported your first collection, or a memory from class, your journey matters. 2025 ADVERTISING FASHION SHOW

This year’s Advertising Fashion Show proved once again why NWSD is a place where creativity thrives and boundaries are made to be broken. Our students stepped up to the challenge: transform a corporate brand into a runway-ready garment – and they delivered beyond expectations. From bold colour palettes to clever use of logos, each look told a visual story rooted in brand identity but expressed through the language of fashion.

Students collaborated with real brands, including X!act Patternmaker, Woolworths, Checkers, Legit, and more. They translated brand values and aesthetics into textures, silhouettes, and styling – giving audiences a new way to see and feel what a brand stands for.

“Advertising is all about telling a story, and fashion gave our students the chance to tell it without saying a word,” says MarleneOosthuizen. “It’s amazing to witness how they took something as technical as a logo or tagline and turned it into something emotionally resonant.”
